Masonry Contractor in Saratoga, CA - Brick Repair and New Walls on Hillside Lots
Brickworks San Jose Concrete & Masonry repairs older brick, chimneys and mortar joints in Saratoga, and builds new retaining walls, walkways and outdoor kitchens on the city's hillside and tree-shaded lots. We're based in nearby San Jose.

Saratoga homes sit on slopes, under old trees
Most Saratoga jobs we look at are homes on hillsides or under big, established trees, and plenty of the houses have been there a long time. That means brick chimneys, old garden walls and retaining walls that have held a slope for decades. Older brick is the work I know best, and it needs a mortar soft enough that it won't crack the brick it's meant to protect. Newer projects here tend to be stone veneer, outdoor kitchens and walkways that have to follow the grade instead of fighting it.
We do the same work next door in Los Gatos and Cupertino, but Saratoga's grade and tree cover ask more of the planning. On a slope a wall is holding back soil and water, and near a big tree the roots decide where a footing can go, so we work those out before we draw anything.
Working in Saratoga starts with the city's permit steps
Building permits in Saratoga come from the city's Building Division. Only the property owner or a licensed contractor can take out the final permit, and whoever does takes on responsibility for the work. We're licensed and fully insured, so when your job needs a permit, we apply as the contractor and carry that responsibility ourselves. A permit and any review it brings add time before work starts, so the schedule here usually turns on the city's steps as much as on the masonry. If it isn't clear whether your job needs one, I'd rather ask the city before we plan anything than guess.
Price follows the site as much as the size of the job. Wall height and length, how much soil comes out of a slope, drainage behind a wall, and how far we carry brick and block up a steep or narrow driveway all add up. On a repair, matching old brick and mortar adds to it too. Your written estimate breaks those out by area and step, so you can see which choices move your number.

Slopes and big trees drive most of the work here
On a hillside lot, water runs downhill into the back of every wall, and when a retaining wall leans or cracks, trapped water is usually part of the reason. When we rebuild, we put drainage behind the wall so the water has somewhere to go. For taller runs we often build concrete block walls, because block with steel and grout in its cells is made to hold that load. If older brick is still sound, I'd rather repoint it with a matched mortar than tear it out.
Big trees lift walkways and push on garden walls as their roots grow, and they also bring a city rule into the job. Saratoga requires an arborist report and review any time construction is planned under a protected tree's canopy or within five feet of its dripline, the line where the outer branches end, and that includes a neighbor's tree. I check where the canopies fall before we lay out a footing, so the review is planned for instead of found late.

What happens after you call us about a Saratoga job
Call or send the form
Call (669) 234-3391 or send the form and tell us what you're seeing, like crumbling joints or a leaning wall, or what you'd like built. Photos help if you have them.
I measure and find the cause
I come out myself, walk the whole job, measure it and take photos of the slope, the drainage and any trees nearby. We talk about what's causing the problem before we talk about the fix.
Read your written estimate
It lists each area and each step, so you can see what you're paying for and compare it with other bids. If the city needs a permit, we sort that out before any work starts.
Our masons build the work
Our own masons do the work, and I check it as it goes up. Saratoga allows permitted construction from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, with no work on Sundays or weekday holidays, so we schedule inside those hours.
Walk the finished job together
We walk the finished job with you and go over anything you want to look at more closely. The work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

Saratoga masonry questions we hear
Do I need a permit to build a wall or lay pavers in Saratoga?
A new wall, fence, driveway or pavers goes to the city's Planning Division to see whether a planning permit is needed. The city's permit FAQ says new construction, additions and structural changes typically need a building permit too. Driveway work also goes to Public Works to check for an encroachment permit. We check with the city first, so you know what applies before you commit.
How much does a masonry project cost in Saratoga?
Your price comes from a written estimate after I've seen the site, because on Saratoga lots the ground and the city's reviews move the number as much as the masonry does. A job that needs a tree, soil or fire review carries that extra work. Older brick also costs more to repair well when the mortar has to be matched to it.
How do I know if my Saratoga project needs a fire department review?
It does if your property is in a Moderate, High or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, or in the city's Wildland-Urban Interface Area. Those properties have to meet the city's wildland-urban interface rules, and the Santa Clara County Fire Department reviews the proposal and sets fire prevention conditions. I ask about this early, because those conditions can shape the work.
Does a new wall on a Saratoga hillside need a geotechnical review?
It can. The city requires geotechnical clearance, a review of the ground's stability, for a new structure, basement or addition in areas with geologic hazards, such as ground that can slide or turn soft in an earthquake. Whether your wall counts is the city's call, so we ask before we design it. On a slope, that answer can change the footing and the schedule.
How long does a building permit stay valid in Saratoga?
Work has to begin within 12 months of the date the permit was activated. After that, an inspection has to happen at least every 180 days or the permit expires. On our jobs I call for inspections as each stage is ready, and we meet the inspector on site, so the permit keeps moving with the work.
How do I check the status of my building permit in Saratoga?
You can follow it online in eTrakit, the city's permitting system, where owners and contractors apply, track status and trade documents. When we pull the permit for your job, you can look it up there anytime instead of waiting on a call from us.
